Abstract
Company XYZ assess new hires through a series of multiple-choice tests, even though most of learning objectives are skill-based. The purpose of the study was to identify how to properly assess mastery of skill-based learning objectives with performance-based assessments in each of the four core new hire classes. A literature review was conducted, including the topics of instructional design, learning objectives, training evaluations, and level two evaluations. The study included focus groups of both new hires and District Managers. The results of the focus groups concluded strong support for performance assessments, both from new hires and District Managers. The study also included the development and administration of one performance assessment in each of the four new hire classes to determine mastery of skill-based learning objectives. There were several recommendations made as a result of this study, including integration of performance assessments into new hire classes and replacing the final exam with a performance assessment administered by the District Manager in the field.
