Measuring Community Interest in AAC in Ojibwe Language: Considerations for Accessible Language Learning and Preservation

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this project is to review the results of a survey that was circulated among professionals with experience in Ojibwe language as a precursor to further research and development of assistive communication technology in the language.

Methods A survey was circulated by email among Ojibwe language professionals asking them to rank how valuable they believe the development of Augmentative and Alternative Communication tools in Ojibwe language may be in a variety of contexts.

Results The results of the survey show that most respondents believe an assistive communication interface that is intuitive to navigate in Ojibwemowin would be valuable across the contexts posited.

Conclusion These results indicate assistive tools to address functional communication, language preservation, traditional language learning, and participation in cultural practices in Ojibwe communities may be a valuable avenue for further research.
