Abstract
This collection includes material on the life and work of Dr. Lorenzo Dow Harvey.
Description
Lorenzo Dow Harvey served as president of Stout Institute from 1908-1922. He was a progressive educator and advocate of industrial education. Harvey was born Nov. 23, 1848, near Deerfield, New Hampshire. Shortly after, his family moved to Rock County, Wisconsin. He graduated from Milton College in 1872 with a degree of A.B., and four years later received a master’s degree. In 1885, he was bestowed the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. After graduation he served as principal of Mazomanie High School; 1875, elected as city superintendent at Sheboygan; 1876, elected professor of political economy and civics at Oshkosh State Normal School in Oshkosh, WI; 1892, made principal of the Milwaukee Normal School in Milwaukee, WI; 1898, became state superintendent of
public instruction in Wisconsin; 1903, took charge of public school system of Menomonie, WI. The Domestic Science/Home Economics building was renamed Harvey Hall in 1952. Harvey passed away in 1922.
