Abstract
In his 4/11/1994 interview with Roxanne Reed, Richard Davis, a bass professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, discusses his musical influences, teaching philosophies, and reflects on the political nature of jazz and the black aesthetic. He emphasizes the importance of black music and its roots in spirituality and church experience and his views on the challenges faced by minority students in higher education. This interview was conducted for inclusion in the School of Music 1994 Seminar Oral History Project.
