Abstract
Description
Eldon Newcomb talks about his background and early interests in science including his high school and college in Missouri and involvement with Paul Burholder and Barbara McClintock. He discusses his army service. He goes on to talk about his arrival at UW and explains the Botany faculty conflicts. He recalls the hiring of Folke Skoog, the establishment of the Institute for Plant Physiology, various Botany faculty and chairmen as well as changes in the Botany Department over time. He mentions the student protests and the Sterling Hall bombing. He discusses his part in Biocore, as well as various courses he taught and students. On the subject of research he talks about grants and his research into plant metabolism, the discovery of microtubules, peroxisomes and nitrogen fixation. He talks about the beginnings of electron microscopy and the production of micrographs, his research trips to University of California-Berkeley, Harvard and Australia and citation classics. In closing he speaks on the current state of botany, Jane Goodall's visit to campus, honors and awards, and retirement.
