What are the Factors and Characteristics of a Successful Secondary Work-Based Learning Experience in the Transportation Industry

Abstract

Demand for skilled employees in transportation career fields continues to exist. Secondary and Postsecondary Education Option (PSEO) students may participate in transportation classes where work-based learning contributes to educational goals. There are often barriers to participating in meaningful work-based learning (WBL) due to age and safety limitations. This qualitative study examined the factors and characteristics of successful secondary work-based learning experiences in the transportation industry. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews focused on educational goals, WBL structure, evaluation processes, and school-industry relationships. Findings indicate that even though obstacles exist, the transportation industry is creating WBL experiences that are appropriate for PSEO and other students who are under 18. This research emphasizes the importance of well-aligned education curricular goals to the opportunities that are provided by the industry to all students, including non-traditional, underrepresented populations, and students with disabilities. Findings in the research show that there is a benefit to employers and employees when there is an inclusive environment at the workplace.
