Abstract
Freedom came to enslaved African Americans at a high cost. The struggle of African Americans' fight for freedom started before the Civil War and trudged on. Slaves would experience limited freedoms, more prejudices, and further hardships. Freedom with its limited advantages, proved to be a victory for the generations of those enslaved. Once attained, many former slaves were unsure of what to do with their newly acquired free status. The struggle to attain freedom came with hardships and setbacks, but freedom truimphed.
