Sonia Kovalevsky was the first major Russian female mathematician, the first woman appointed to a full professorship in Northern Europe and one of the first women to work as an editor for a scientific journal. Sonia Kovalevsky was also an advocate of womens rights in the 19th century. Sonia Kovalevsky Day was organized by Association for Women in Mathematics to encourage young women to continue their study of mathematics, to assist them with their transition from middle school to high school and from high school to college. The purpose of this study was to expose high school young women to opportunities available in math and science by creating fun and exciting experiences through workshops, plenary talks, panel discussion, and a math competition.en
