Abstract

Description

A three year study was implemented in the spring of 1990 to investigate the effects of landspreading municipal solid waste (MSW) compost on agricultural lands. Two sites were chosen; a Mt. Carroll silt loam soil and a Plainfield loamy sand. Compost was spread at each site at three different rates (including the control) on twenty-four plots with corn and soybeans grown in them. Three field seasons were conducted from 1990 through 1992. Monitoring during the field seasons included: gravitational and capillary soil water sampling at a depth of 91 cm, corn and soybean leaf and grain tissue sampling, and soil sampling at depths of 0-15 cm, 15-40 cm, 40-66 cm, and 66-91 cm. The effects of the MSW compost on: 1.) Distribution of trace elements within two soil profiles, 2.)Plant heavy metal uptake, and 3.)Groundwater pollution potential are discussed in three separate papers within this thesis. Each of the papers is a separate entity and will have its own abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, summary/recommendations, tables, figures, and reference page.
