Abstract

Chloroethylene (vinyl chloride) is a highly flammable chemical which exists as a gas at room temperature. It is used in producing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which in turn is widely used in the manufacture of plastics. It is moderately soluble in water and may enter the aquatic environment via discharges from chemical plants where it is manufactured or used, and spills.
