Abstract

Schools are responsible forsupporting students with dyslexiausing instructional and behavioral approaches to intervention; however, increased prevalence of dyslexia has made responsibility of early identification and effective remediation difficult.Students with dyslexia can behard to identify due to the range and variability of presenting symptoms. Dyslexia is a life-long, specific learning disability that impacts the comprehension of written and spoken language with presenting symptoms in behavior, reading, and vocabulary deficits (International Dyslexia Association, 2002). Research supports the use of multisensory intervention programsfor students with dyslexia(Learning Disability Association of America, n.d.). Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory, instructional approach that uses explicit teachingand repetitive practice of fundamental reading skills to addressacademic performance in students with dyslexia(Lim & Oei, 2015). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a multisensory, psychotherapeutic approach to address behavioral symptoms of dyslexia that uses counseling services to help students build intrinsic motivation, self-management skills, and positive and constructive thought (Toland & Boyle, 2008).Further research is needed to determine genetic causation of dyslexia, update sample groups to represent current populationwith dyslexia, as well as provide effective universal-level teaching practices for dyslexia identification and reading skills knowledge applicable in the general education classroom.
