Abstract
Employee engagement, job satisfaction, and retention impact the success of organizations.
Turnover of employees is costly, both in lost production and in expenses related to hiring and
training new employees. Direct supervisors have a substantial influence on employees’
engagement, job satisfaction, and retention. However, many organizations do not proactively
train and evaluate supervisor performance. This study included interviews of employees of four
nonprofit organizations, to determine whether there was a correlation between the employees’
job satisfaction and their ability to provide feedback about their supervisor. Results of the
interviews suggest the ability to provide feedback about supervisors was related to higher job
satisfaction.
