Abstract

Appearance ratings were taken on 25 adult males before and after an exercise intervention program to determine the relationship between a 6-week training program and improved physical appearance and to identify a relationship between shoulder-to-waist ration 2nd appearance scores. Adult male subjects (18-40 yr) who were previously sedentary were randomly assigned to one of three groups, cardiovascular, strength or control. Subjects participating in an exercise group performed assigned activities for an average of 34 minutes, 3 times a week. All subjects were pre and post tested on body composition, strength and cardiovascular fitness. Subjects were also digitally photographed from 4 angles. The photographs were rated by the subjects and a panel of 6 judges with an analog scale. This study shows that a 6-week training program is not sufficient to change self-rated or panel-rated attractiveness scores for adult males. In addition, insignificant changes in attractiveness precluded further analysis on the relationship between shoulder-to-waist ratio and appearance scores.
