Abstract

The focus of this study is to determine the deficiency origin and provide the types general repairs of deficiencies that negatively affect Midwest Region bridge decks due to the climate in which they are located. As there are various factors that pertain to the existing condition concerns that stakeholders of the bridges face, studies must be performed to evaluate the causes of the defects. Concrete bridge decks in the region have presented various signs of deterioration due to the lack of knowledge related to the importance of implementing a strategic preventative maintenance program and the consequences of ignorance related to such a program. Deterioration of bridges decks and other structural components are likely to be caused by the climates thermal actions and unfavorable chemical exposures as calcium chlorides are historically used for ice and snow control methods in the region. As deterioration factors progress and become more concerning, they only pose higher risks of ultimate failure of the structure. Eventually, the structural integrity of the entire bridge system can be affected by the neglect. The efforts in attempt to reduce further damage and extend the lifecycle of the aging structures needs to be prioritized by the maintenance authority over them.
