Abstract
Forty-one female Ss, aged 10-13, volunteered to undergo underwater
weighing and to perform a maximal treadmill exercise test (T ).
Forty Ss also completed a maximal bicycle ergometer test (T 9. Comparison
of physical characteristics (ht , wt, % fat, LBW) behreen age
groups, as well as peak cardiorespiratory responses to the treadmill
exercise (Lemin , ml-kg -min , ml.kgLB\V -cmin , HR, V , time,
RER) was done. A one-way ANOVA was used to determine the sig between
age groups and a post-hoc test showed where the sig occurred.
Sig diff (P6.05) in ht was found between 10 and 12 yr old Ss and 10
and 13 yr Sld Ss; in wt between 10 and 13 yr old Ss and 11 and 13 yr
old Ss; in-4BW between 10 and 13 yr old Ss and 11 and 13 yr old Ss.
Peak L'min differed (P~05) between 10 and 13 yr old Ss and 11 and
13 yr old Ss. Peak VE Gas found to differ sig (Pd.05) between 10 and
13 yr old Ss. No other variable differed (Ex 057 between ages.
Eighteen of these Ss volunteered to perform a retest (T2), 9 on the
treadmill, 9 on the bicycle ergometer. A Pearson Product Moment r
was employed to covare each varaible for T1 and T2. Siglr (P<.051
were seeglin Ll~in for treadmill exercise and in L-min , miekg- omin ,
ml'kgLBIV smin and VE for bicycle ergometry. Dependent "t'l tests -
showed no sig diff (b.05) in mean values between TI and T" in mlakg lamin-'
and HR for peak treahill exercise. For bicycle exerciseY2no sig diff
(Px05) was observed in V and performance time. It was concluded that
dyfficulty in the attainmgnt of maximal exercise in children due to a
lack of motivation to reach that level of effort makes the reliability
and reproducibility of peak cardiorespiratory response questionable.
