Abstract
In his three February 2010 interviews with Bob Lange, Alex Nagel charts the progress of his career as a mathematician and administrator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison through the 1970s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. After detailing his developing interest in mathematics and history, he outlines the major influences on his scholarly trajectory and the shape of his career’s research. He also reflects on his extensive administrative experience in the mathematics department and associate deanship of the College of Letters and Sciences. He shares insights about key figures in the natural sciences at UW, what he perceives as disciplinary differences in the College of L&S, and opportunities and challenges presented to UW. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW-Madison Oral History Program.
