The Impact of Participation in Career and Technical Student Organizations and High School CTE Programs on Leadership as an Employability Skill and Academic Achievement

Abstract

Participation in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) enhances students’ academic achievement, leadership abilities, and career readiness. This study analyzed data from three bounded case studies to identify patterns demonstrating how CTE and CTSO participation develop essential 21st-century skills, including leadership, teamwork, and civic engagement. Students reported high levels of academic preparedness (M = 4.2) and professional responsibility (M = 4.1), supported by teachers and mentors with similar though slightly lower ratings. Differences among students, teachers, and coordinators highlighted the value of multiple stakeholder perspectives in program evaluation. Both hypotheses were supported: CTE participation correlated with improved academic outcomes, and CTSO involvement was linked to enhanced leadership development. Findings underscore the educational impact of CTE and CTSOs, advocating for equitable access and policy recognition of these programs as essential contributors to academic, professional, and personal growth.
