Abstract

Tribromomethane (bromoform) is a liquid which is heavier than water with a chloroform-like odor and a sweetish taste. It is used in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, as an ingredient in fire-resistant chemicals and gauge fluid; as a solvent for waxes, grease and oils; and in separating mixtures of nimerals. It is highly soluble in water. Trigromomethane may enter the aquatic environment via industrial discharges where it is manufactured or used, municipal waste treatment plant discharges, or spills.
