Abstract
Soil health is determined by many different factors that contribute to its quality. Physical, chemical, and biological factors work together to create nutrient rich systems that are vital to the living ecosystem. Laboratory testing is often an awfully expensive and time-consuming process which many farmers are reluctant to do. This study is a proof of concept that a soil aggregate kit can be constructed for under $50 with real time results in under 30 minutes. This type of testing allows farmers to see immediate physical characteristics of soils in their agricultural systems. The kits were constructed using materials found in bait shops and hobby stores and were very inexpensive. Criteria for slaking is outlined in the study and is determined on the tester’s sampling practices. Application of this kit and the accuracy of the results are discussed. The kit is a promising alternative, but not a substitute for laboratory testing.
