Abstract

Toy packaging is often designed using conventional visual communication standards that prioritize branding, shelf presence, and marketing appeal, while overlooking the cognitive, sensory, and physical needs of many users. For neurodivergent users including, but not limited to autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and many others, the packaging visuals can become overwhelming, have difficulties in interoperating, or can be physically frustrating to interact with. This study explores how inclusive design principles can be integrated into toy packaging to support clearer communication, reduce sensory overload, and create a more accessible user experience. Using a qualitative research approach, this study gathered an open ended survey response from different users from individuals, to families, to even including professionals who work with neurodivergent people. These responses were then analyzed to identify common preferences related to packaging in general and what or how they can be applied to toy packaging. The findings revealed consistent preferences for simplified typography, clear visual hierarchy, calm color palettes, predictable tactile experiences, packaging systems that are easy to open, and packages that are designed for reuse. There was also a commonality between responses and literature being that accessibility improves overall usability even for neurotypical users. By applying these insights, this research proposes design strategies that position inclusivity as a foundational element of packaging design rather than an afterthought. The study contributes to conversations around ethical, human-centered, and sustainable design practices within the toy industry and visual communication field.
