Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how choice affects first grade students' reading engagement and stamina. CAFE (Boushey and Moser, 2009) strategies and the DAILY FIVE (Boushey and Moser, 2006) structure are used to help students develop their literacy skills. The students are given options to read to self, buddy read, listen to reading, work on writing, and word work. The data collected supported that choice did improve reading engagement and stamina. 20 out of 23 students reported that choice was important to them.
