A new input Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) must develop for use of the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Mechanistic-Empirical Design Guide is resilient modulus of subgrade soils, their reaction to stress. A 2006 WHRP study developed such inputs based on a small sample size. This research will expand the sample size a broader range of Wisconsin soils, and validate a method for estimating the resilient modulus of various Wisconsin soils based on data from both studies. WisDOT designers will have a method for estimating the resilient modulus of a wide range of Wisconsin soils, including coarse-grained soils as well as fine. This tool will allow for more precise subgrade design and longer-lasting pavements.en
