Abstract

Biphenyl (diphenyl, phenyl'benzene) is a white or slightly yellow crystalline solid of moderate solubility in water. Its major uses are in the production of heat-transfer fluids and dye carriers for textile dyeing. Lesser uses are as a mold retardant in citrus fruit wrappers, in formation of plastics, optical brighteners, and hydraulic fluids. It may enter the aquatic environment via effluents from chemical industries where it is manufactured or used, and. spills.
