Environmental Awareness through Organic Gardening

Abstract

Many of our major environmental problems result from food production practices that have emphasized the overuse of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The Wisconsin Cooperative Extension Service currently conducts educational programs to assist farmers in reducing their use of agricultural chemicals, but no such program exists for home gardeners. Recognizing the importance of environmentally sound gardening practices, Wisconsin 4-H has endorsed the development of an organic gardening education program for statewide use. "Organically Grown" is an educational program for Wisconsin 4-H youth, families and leaders. Its purpose is to teach small scale organic gardening techniques, and to encourage greater appreciation and understanding of the natural environment. The program consists of two components: a handbook of lessons for 4-H youth, leaders and families, and a corresponding instructional videotape. The educational materials lead the user through an entire growing season, teach basic organic gardening skills, and emphasize ecology and earth stewardship. Through this thesis the draft version of these materials were developed. The draft version is to be piloted by select 4-H leaders and youth for one to two years. When a final revision based on evaluations is developed, the program will be available to all 4-H members throughout Wisconsin and the nation.
