The format of this thesis deviates from the norm because it is in the form of three papers written for publication in the Journal of Wildlife Management. Each paper deals with a different aspect of research on the American woodcock (Philohela minor) in central Wisconsin. The research was conducted in the spring and summer of 1975 and 1976 with some additional work in the spring of 1977. The primary objectives of the study were to: (1) determine habitat preferences (2) study breeding biology including nesting success and growth of chicks (3) study characteristics of a heavily hunted population and (4) investigate the potential for initiating a banding program in the area. Material not intended for publication is found in the Appendix.en_US
