“All his life, Beau had looked forward to the Voyage, but the forced circumstances of his departure, the impending threat of humans, and the change of landscape as he traveled onward, weighed heavily on him. A great depression dampened his spirit the further he swam from home and the more unfamiliar his surroundings became. Worst of all, it seemed as though the further he got from Pokegama, the more the human’s grip on the land strengthened...”
In this short story for young adult readers, science communicator Mikaela Serio follows a young wetland creature on a journey of discovery through the mighty St. Louis River estuary at the headwaters of Lake Superior, questing to know the answer to his questions- Are these humans good? Are they dangerous? And what exactly are they up to?

About the author:
Mikaela Serio is a student at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she is pursuing a minor in Creative Writing and a major in Marine Science. She was awarded an Artistic Achievement Award in Creative Writing, and works as a tutor at the writing center. Mikaela created this story in 2025 while she was a science communications intern at the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve through the NOAA Hollings Scholar Program.
