Abstract
Video game play can influence individuals to forgo basic needs in exchange for rewards built into video games. Research on gambling addiction has shown decreased levels of response in the mesolimbic-dopaminergic reward pathway of the prefrontal cortex. Although there is no diagnosis for video game addiction in the United States, it is suggested that compulsive video game play alters the reward systems in the brain similar to other addictions
