Abstract
Through a historical examination of the rise of quantification in racial science, this thesis traces key methodological developments through 1900 and dissects the use of categorization as a tool of social power. This thesis seeks to answer the following questions:
1. How did the Census Bureau transform racialized differences into quantifiable data for the 1890 census?
2. How was the design and implementation of data processing technologies in the 1890 census shaped by various public and private actors?
