Abstract

This thesis examines the visual culture of the Hopi through Katsinam. The Hopi have survived for thousands of years by maintaining their cultural traditions through their relationships with Katsinam. Katsinam are multifaceted spiritual beings that are present in the Hopi's everyday life, ceremonies, and rituals; and as well, in their art form called tithu. Thus, the thesis builds on the existing published information and promotes better understanding of the Hopi visual traditions and their relationships with Katsinam. The thesis also demonstrates how art can provide a meaning of existence for a people of peace.
